Effective date: 2026-08-22 Last updated: 2026-08-22
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Gloss browser extension, the website at https://gloss.space, the Gloss CLI, and any related services (collectively, the "Service"). Gloss is an independent project operated by Agustín Covarrubias ("Gloss", "we", "us"), an individual based in Chile, as a personal project. There is no separate legal entity behind the Service at this time.
By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
1. The Service
Gloss lets you highlight text on webpages, save bookmarks, and optionally share that activity with friends you add inside the Service. Features, interfaces, and limits may change over time as we improve the product.
2. Eligibility and accounts
- You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age of digital consent in your jurisdiction, whichever is higher) to use Gloss.
- You are responsible for keeping your login credentials and any API keys secure. Notify us immediately at gloss@agucova.dev if you suspect unauthorized access to your account.
- You are responsible for all activity under your account, including through any API keys you create.
- One person per account. Do not share your account or impersonate anyone else.
3. Your content
You retain ownership of the highlights, bookmarks, comments, tags, and other content you create in Gloss ("Your Content").
You grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, reproduce, modify (only for technical purposes — e.g., format conversion, indexing, caching), display, and transmit Your Content solely to operate and provide the Service to you and the users you share it with. We do not claim ownership of Your Content, and we do not use Your Content to train machine-learning or AI models.
When you mark content as "friends" or "public", you authorize us to display that content to the corresponding audience. You are responsible for the content you choose to share.
Highlighted excerpts and copyright
Highlights are short excerpts of webpages you are already permitted to access. You are responsible for ensuring your use of the underlying content is lawful in your jurisdiction (e.g., personal study, commentary, fair use, fair dealing, or quotation rights). We store the URL alongside the excerpt so the original source remains attributable.
If you believe your copyrighted work has been used on Gloss in a way that constitutes infringement, send a notice to gloss@agucova.dev (subject: "DMCA") including all information required by the DMCA (17 U.S.C. § 512) or the equivalent mechanism in your jurisdiction. We will respond to valid notices.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to use the Service to:
- Violate any law or third-party right (including intellectual property and privacy rights).
- Highlight, save, comment on, or share content that is illegal, harassing, defamatory, hateful, threatening, sexually explicit involving minors, or otherwise objectionable.
- Upload or link to malware, phishing content, or material designed to harm users or systems.
- Attempt to access accounts, data, or systems that do not belong to you, or circumvent authentication, rate limits, or security measures.
- Scrape, crawl, or bulk-export data from Gloss beyond what the official API and CLI allow, or in violation of the rate limits they enforce.
- Reverse-engineer the Service except to the extent permitted by applicable law.
- Use the Service to build a competing product by copying features, data, or design.
- Impersonate another person or misrepresent your affiliation with any person or entity.
- Interfere with the Service, our infrastructure, or other users' enjoyment of it.
We may suspend or terminate accounts, remove content, or take other action for violations of these Terms.
5. Friends and shared content
Sharing features (friend requests, "friends" visibility, "public" visibility, comments, and @mentions) are opt-in. Other users you interact with are not employees or agents of Gloss. We do not guarantee the conduct of other users and are not responsible for content they share.
If another user harasses you or violates these Terms, report them to gloss@agucova.dev.
6. Browser extension
The Gloss extension is distributed through browser extension catalogs —
currently the Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-ons. Your use of the
extension is also subject to the terms of the store you installed it from.
The extension requests only the permissions necessary for the Service to
function (storage, offscreen, and host access); see §4 of the Privacy
Policy for the full list and the reason for each.
7. API and CLI
If you use the Gloss API or CLI via an API key:
- Requests are subject to rate limits. We may change these limits to protect the Service.
- You may not share API keys publicly. API keys embedded in client-side code (e.g., a public GitHub repo) will be revoked.
read-scoped keys cannot create, modify, or delete content;write-scoped keys can. Choose the minimum scope your integration needs.- Automated access must respect robots-like signals and must not be used to re-export another user's shared content at scale.
8. Paid features
Gloss is currently offered free of charge. If we introduce paid features in the future, we will give you advance notice and a clear opportunity to accept new pricing terms before charging you. Existing content and free-tier functionality will remain available under reasonable continuity terms.
9. Third-party websites
Gloss operates on top of webpages served by third parties. We are not responsible for the content, accuracy, availability, or terms of those websites. Visiting a page through Gloss (e.g., following a bookmark) does not constitute endorsement of that page.
10. Feedback
If you send us ideas, bug reports, or suggestions, you grant us a perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free license to use them without obligation to you. We are free to incorporate feedback into the Service without attribution or compensation.
11. Termination
By you. You may close your account at any time by emailing gloss@agucova.dev from the address on the account. Deletion is handled as described in the Privacy Policy.
By us. We may suspend or terminate your access immediately, with or without notice, if you violate these Terms, create risk or legal exposure for us, or fail to use the Service for an extended period. Where reasonable, we will try to give you advance notice and an opportunity to export your data.
Sections that by their nature should survive termination (including §3 license grant for already-shared content, §4, §10, §12, §13, §14, and §15) will survive.
12. Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure, error-free, or that highlights will always re-anchor correctly on pages that have changed.
You are responsible for keeping independent backups of content that matters
to you. The Gloss CLI can list your highlights, bookmarks, and tags as JSON,
CSV, or Markdown with a read-scoped API key; for a full account export,
email gloss@agucova.dev.
13. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Gloss and its officers, employees, and contractors will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenues, data, or goodwill, arising out of or in connection with the Service.
Our total aggregate liability for any claim arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service will not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or (b) USD $50.
Some jurisdictions do not allow these limitations; in those jurisdictions, our liability is limited to the maximum extent permitted by law.
14. Indemnification
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Gloss and its personnel from any claim, damages, or expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of your content, your use of the Service, or your violation of these Terms or applicable law.
15. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of Chile, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute will be resolved exclusively in the competent courts of Santiago, Chile, and you consent to their personal jurisdiction, except where mandatory consumer-protection law in your country of residence grants you the right to bring the dispute in your local courts.
16. Changes to the Service and these Terms
We may modify the Service or these Terms from time to time. For material changes to the Terms, we will provide at least 30 days' advance notice by email or in-product. Continued use of the Service after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms. If you do not agree, stop using the Service and delete your account before the effective date.
17. Miscellaneous
- Entire agreement. These Terms and the Privacy Policy constitute the entire agreement between you and Gloss regarding the Service.
- No waiver. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of our right to do so later.
- Severability. If any provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in effect.
- Assignment. You may not assign these Terms without our consent. We may assign them in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
- No agency. Nothing in these Terms creates a partnership, joint venture, employment, or agency relationship.
